KUWAIT: Kuwait has launched investigations into allegations about organized espionage in the country, with phone calls made by certain Kuwaiti figures being tapped, states a recent report quoting sources.

Speaking to Al-Rai, sources explained that a large room in the General Department of State Security equipped with high-tech surveillance devices has “disappeared mysteriously.”

According to the report published yesterday, the State Security Department purchased an integrated intelligence system from a former Soviet country last year for KD 4 million, and placed it in a restricted zone inside the headquarters’ building.

Sources added that the system was brought to “monitor suspicious terrorist activities and boost the department’s security capabilities,” noting that the devices allow phone calls to be monitored through landlines and cell phones.

But last July, everything the isolated room, including staff members hired specifically to operate the devices, vanished without an explanation, said sources. An investigation is currently ongoing to unearth the mystery behind the devices’ disappearance, and also examine information which hint that the devices could have been used by a certain unnamed individual to spy on prominent Kuwaiti individuals. —Al-Rai
